Comme je Méditais en Silence,
Sur mes poèmes revenant, m’attardant, réfléchissant,
Un Fantôme m’est apparu, son visage mal convaincu
Terrifiant par sa beauté, sa puissance et son âge,
Le génie des poètes d’antan,
Qui me considérait de ses yeux flamboyantsDu doigt me désignant tous ces chants immortels
Et la voix menaçante, Que chantes-tu ? dit-il,
Ne comprends-tu pas que les bardes promis à la pérennité
N’ont qu’un seul sujet, qui est la Guerre, et la fortune des combats,
Et la formation du parfait soldat.
Sache-le, alors je répondis,
C’est autant, Ombre altière, je chante aussi la guerre, et plus longue et plus grande qu’aucune,
Livrée dans ce recueil,
à l’issue incertaine, avec ses dérobades et ses avances et ses retraites,
et sa victoire qui chancelle et puis s’arrête,
(Et que pourtant,
je crois, enfin, inévitable, ou quasiment,) livrée sur cette terre,Pour la vie et la mort, pour notre Ame éternelle, et notre Corps,
Je suis là, moi aussi, qui chante le chant des combats,
Et par-dessus tout,
la bravoure du soldat.
As I ponder'd in silence,
Returning upon my poems, considering, lingering long,
A Phantom arose before me with distrustful aspect,
Terrible in beauty, age, and power,
The genius of poets of old lands,
As to me directing like flame its eyes,
With finger pointing to many immortal songs,
And menacing voice, What singest thou? it said,
Know'st thou not there is hut one theme for ever-enduring bards?
And that is the theme of War, the fortune of battles,
The making of perfect soldiers.
Be it so, then I answer'd,
I too haughty Shade also sing war, and a longer and greater one than any,
Waged in my book with varying fortune, with flight, advance and retreat, victory deferr'd and wavering,
(Yet methinks certain, or as good as certain, at the last,) the field the world,
For life and death, for the Body and for the eternal Soul,
Lo, I too am come, chanting the chant of battles,
I above all promote brave soldiers.
